Technology in the Classroom

In today’s age of advancing technology, it is important that we continue to incorporate these new tools into our classrooms. Technology can be used in a multitude of ways that not only makes an educators life easier but truly supports the students success while also advancing their rate of growth.

Some examples of different technology used during my internship can be seen below. One of the most frequently used tools was the Sight Reading Factor website. This website allows you to create a customized, random sight reading example for any instrument, ensemble, or difficulty level. You can pick your keys, types of rhythms, and even specialty markings. This technological tool became incredibly useful when assessment season began and sight reading became an every day occurrence.

Another useful piece of technology that was incorporated into the classroom was the Yamaha Harmony Director. This keyboard can be plugged into any sound system and has a multitude of functions. It has the capability of sounding like any instrument and transposing to its key. It also has a built in metronome with a variety of subdivision settings. One of the most useful features of the Harmony Director is the tuner with Pure Temperament options. This tuner can help students better hear and understand pitch and tonality.

Other technologies that can be used in the classroom for both teachers and students are notation software programs like Finale, Sibelius, or MuseScore. These allows teachers and students to notate and create music easily like new compositions, updated parts, and class exercises.
